Emerging Scholars Lecture Series
CJHS, Youngstown State University
Jewish Studies Program, Kent State University

Dr. Elly Moseson
Visiting Professor in Eastern European Jewish Studies
YIVO Institute for Jewish Research

As a place of shelter and the location in which a great deal of the joys and tragedies of life were experienced, pre-modern societies viewed the home as both affording and requiring magical protection. Dr. Moseson will describe the variety of Jewish magical beliefs and practices relating to the domestic sphere and present as an illustrative example the performance of consecration ceremonies upon moving into a newly built house. It will also explore the oral and textual transmission of magical lore, the role of women as ritual experts and the tension between magic and normative religious practice.
